All the band members contributed to the writing of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast." "If" was written by Waters, "Summer '68" by Wright, and "Fat Old Sun" by Gilmour. Similar to Ummagumma, the first half of the album was a group effort while the second half was more focused on solo contributions from the band members. Because of a new recording process EMI did not allow tapes to be spliced, so Waters and Mason had to play their entire parts for the 23 minute title track while the others were overdubbed onto the recordings. Parts of the title track were performed live before the band decided to include them in the album (the main theme was performed as "Theme from an Imaginary Western" in January 1970).
